Though there are lots of software titles that provide similar filters and effects, Dfx 3.0 is one of the few software titles that allow you to work seamlessly back and forth between stills and video. So, for photographers who find themselves delving both into stills and motion, the software provides a single destination for enhancing and improving digital imagery.
All things considered, however, Tiffen Dfx is still a hugely likeable package at a very reasonable price. It lets those with little knowledge and skill create professional-style effects very quickly, and there are so many presets, it will be some time before you’ve worked your way around even a fraction of the tools on offer. Warmly recommended.
When we say high end, we’re talking most every film stock, grain filter, grads, fulls, etc to give you the range of a full palette of effects. Which also means creative choice. I just began using the plug-in version for Lightroom and I was totally impressed with the ease of use and the quality results. With a photo selected in Lightroom, I chose Edit -> in Tiffen Dfx and a new window opened full screen. (Actually in two screens since I’m using dual monitors.) With a preview choice of either 1024 or 2048 pixels wide, I had a nice large image to see the results of the filters as I picked them. Heck, you can even size the thumbnails small, medium or large. I few months ago Tiffen released it’s upgraded Dfx 3.0 software with 2,000 plus filters and effects. This plugin works with Aperture, Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Elements or as a standalone application. I’ve spent the last few weeks playing with Dfx, and with its latest 3.06 upgrade, I’m here to tell you it’s rock solid. One of the best features of this plug-in is the usability. The Dfx Interface allows you to preview the tons of presets each filter comes with. Within the Dfx Interface you can customize the parameters of a preset to make it yours while viewing it in real-time. There are so many different film looks it is absolutely ridiculous…which is a great thing. In the past I never dabbled with different film stocks because of price and I didn’t shoot with a film camera.
